展覧会レポート：サントリー美術館「リニューアル・オープン記念展 Ⅱ 日本美術の裏の裏」（六本木エリア）
Exhibition Report: “Reopening Celebration II Japanese Art: Deep and Deeper" at Suntory Museum of Art (Roppongi area)
サントリー美術館ではリニューアルオープンを記念し、同館の日本美術コレクションを集めた展覧会が11月29日(日)まで開催中です。
Celebrating their renewal open, Suntory Museum of Art is hosting an exhibition of traditional Japanese art from their collection.
同展は、古くから日本人を魅了してきた多彩な美術品の数々を、当時の人々の楽しみ方で鑑賞しようというユニークな試みです。生活様式がすっかり変わってしまった現代でも、私たち鑑賞者が親しみをもてるように工夫された展示は、まるで昔の日本人になりきって美を味わう気分です。
This unique exhibition introduces a new way to experience aesthetics of Japan long ago, as the people of that time appreciated it. For us living in a contemporary Japan with entirely different lifestyles, this show provides an opportunity to learn how our ancestors enjoyed beauty in daily objects.
日本画や室内装飾品は、和室内のどこにどうやって飾り、その空間にどんな効果を生み出したのか？茶道具をはじめとする陶磁器は、どの面を「正面」としてかざり、どう異なる印象を与えたのか？かつて一般的な教養だった和歌の知識から、美術品の意匠や銘が当時の人たちにとってどんな意味合いを持ったのか？昔は当たり前だったことが、現代の私たちの生活からずいぶんかけ離れていることに気付かされます。
With scrolls and folding screens of Japanese paintings, how did people decorate a Japanese-style room to create a certain effect in that space? With ceramics used in Tea ceremonies for example, which side of the piece was decided as “the face” and decorated accordingly, and what different impressions did it create? With knowledge of Waka (Japanese poems) commonly shared by people of the old times, how did they understand meanings behind titles and patterns of art pieces? We, as a viewer, cannot help but notice that these aspects of life which used to be very common in the Japanese culture is now long lost.
一方で、驚くほど精密に作られたミニチュア雛道具や、ヘタウマな絵が印象的な絵物語などからは、日本人独特の「かわいい」、「しみじみ」、「味がある」といった感性が感じ取れます。今でも通用するこうした感覚は、日本文化の美意識の中で長い時間をかけて培われ、確かに受け継がれてきたことが分かります。
On the other hand, one can see typical Japanese sensibilities such as “kawaii (cute/kische)”, “shimi-jimi (a permeating sense of good feeling), “aji ga aru (subtle sense of good taste)”, are present in exhibited objects, like surprisingly detailed miniature-doll furniture and tools and scroll paintings with poorly drawn pictures which are funny and strangely tasteful. It is clear that these distinctly Japanese tastes have been cultivated over a very long time and handed down to us in the modern days.
美術品を通して、今と昔をつなぐ鑑賞体験ができる同展。日本美術になじみのない方でも、楽しめるポイント満載です。
Through art pieces of the old times, this exhibition connects us with the long lost Japan. It is full of tips for both seasoned and inexperienced museum goers to enjoy Japanese art from a fresh point of view.
【サントリー美術館とは】
日本を代表する飲料メーカー・サントリーが1961年に開館したサントリー美術館は、「生活の中の美」を基本理念とし、絵画、陶磁、漆工、染織など日本古美術 約3000点のコレクションを収蔵しています。2007年には現在のロケーションである東京ミッドタウンに移転し、以来、都市の中で美術品を鑑賞できる落ち着いた空間を提供しています。2019年11月から改修工事のため休館し、2020年7月リニューアルオープンしました。

Opened in 1961 by Suntory, one of the leading beverage manufacturers in Japan, Suntory Museum of Art collects old Japanese art (paintings, ceramics, Japanese lacquer, and fabrics) and owns about 3,000 pieces in their collection. Since moving to the current location in Tokyo Midtown, they have been providing a quiet space to enjoy fine art right in the middle of the city. They were closed for renewal construction from November 2019 and reopened in July 2020.
